April 3, 2020: Pocketspace
Good morning,
If you’re feeling cooped up at home, you’re not alone. My girlfriend and I were just discussing how we feel so tired, and we think it’s because it’s been so long since we’ve gotten some really good exercise.
If you do decide to exercise outside this weekend, please remember to stay away from other people!
On to the update.
Pocketspace
TL;DR - I’m starting a community of micro-gyms that can be safely used while preserving social distancing, see pocketspace.org.
Imagine for a moment that it’s June, and daily new coronavirus cases are back down to early march levels. How do we start to emerge from shelter-in-place without causing another outbreak? Perhaps a combination of testing & aggressive small-scale quarantining will work. But I don’t think it’s out of the question that we might see mandatory social distancing for the rest of 2020 as coronavirus burns a slow burn.
Exercising at home might work some people, but if you’re like me and you live in a tiny 1 bedroom apartment, there’s simply no space for an exercise bike, let alone a bouldering wall. And yet gyms are challenging because there are a lot of people in a small space, and mask-wearing is tricky when you’re sweating.
One solution might be to repurpose underutilized garages by transforming them into micro-gyms. I’m starting a community to get this off the ground so that it can be ready by the time that shelter-in-place orders start to be lifted. And of course, if you have any questions, feel free to reply to this email.

That’s all for today, have a great weekend!
